Our History

Throughout the years, our commitment to serving the people of North Carolina with excellence and compassion has never waivered.

Our Founder, Rutledge “Ron” Shuler, was born and raised in a small farming community in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. He was an alumnus of the University of South Carolina and the Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science. While in Dallas, he served as Vice President of his graduating class and also received the President’s Award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement.

Driven by his genuine compassion for people, Ron spent his career as a funeral service professional, working first as a funeral director, and then in sales and marketing where he served as President of the North Carolina Funeral Suppliers’ Association. He always knew that he ultimately wanted to return to funeral directing, and his desire was to expand funeral service for the folks in our area.

In 1998, Ron fulfilled his lifetime goal which was to open a funeral home that would be the standard bearer of dignified, quality service and compassionate care for families in our community. Since opening, Shuler Funeral Home has been honored to be a place where families turn in their time of sorrow and need. In recognition of the diligence and mission of Shuler Funeral Home, the National Funeral Directors Association honored Shuler Funeral Home with the Pursuit of Excellence Award.

Ron served as President until proudly partnering in 2008 with our current owner and President, Jimmy Altmeyer. Jimmy brings that same level of experience, leadership and compassion that folks in our area have come to expect. Shuler Funeral Home remains a family-owned business upon which families rely for dignified and excellent care during times of need.
