Ada Jarvis Long, 96, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the Elizabeth House.
She was born on December 28, 1915 in Madison County to the late Hiram and Eliza Ray Jarvis. She has lived in Hendersonville most of her life. Ada was the ten of eleven children and the last survivor of her siblings and their spouses. Her greatest joy was her family and her flower garden. She graduated from Asheville Teachers’ College and taught briefly. She retired from Pardee Hospital as a dietary supervisor.
She was a member of Valley Hill Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and a teacher. She found joy in planting and caring for the flowers at the church. In her late eighties she received landscaping awards from the city of Hendersonville for her beautiful flower garden.
In addition to her parents, Ada is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Long, Sr.; a daughter, Peggy Jane Long; four sisters, Bessie Jarvis, Bertie Anderson, Bonnie Briggs, and Ollie Chandler; and six brothers, Gay, Bascomb, Wayne, Ronnie, Hobert, and Roy Jarvis.
She is survived by two sons, Bill Long and his wife Birgit and Mike Long and his wife Pam; a daughter, Rita Stepp and her husband Mike; seven grandchildren, Chris Long and his wife Stacey of Williamsburg, VA, Meghan Sawtelle and her husband Chris of Hendersonville, Ginny Thomas and her husband Larry of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Jason Long of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Chad Long of Fletcher, Danielle McCall and her husband Rex of Dana; and April Stepp of Atlanta, GA; and eleven great-grandchildren, Zoe and Cooper Long, Klien and Clay Sawtelle, Emerson, Larry, and Charmaine Thomas, Dane Long, and Callie, Maggie, and Gus McCall.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Shuler Funeral Home.
