Arnold “Arnie” Goard, 70, of Hendersonville died Tuesday May 21 at the Elizabeth House. A native of Roanoke, VA, he had lived in the Atlanta area from 1966 to 2006 when he moved to Hendersonville. Having served stateside during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Airforce, he moved to the Atlanta area and was an aircraft and powerplant mechanic for Delta Airlines, retiring after 28 years with the company.
Arnie was a member of Mills River United Methodist Church and served on the Visitation Team in addition to volunteering for the Etowah United Methodish Churches Fishes and Loaves food pantry, and organized several golf tournaments benefiting various charities at those churches. He was an avid woodworker and was a member of the Woodturners Guild of North Carolina.
Having been recently proceeded in death by a brother, David Goard, he is survived by his wife of 22 years, Norene Goard, two sons, Daryl Goard and his wife Rebecca of Loganville, GA and Kirk Beckham and his wife Amanda of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, three sisters, Angela Parker of Winston Salem, NC, Marlene Minish of Lewisville, NC and Carolyn Schrader of Durham, NC, a brother, Ronald Goard and his wife, Joanne of Greenwood, SC and three grandchildren, Sierra and Savannah Goard and Matthew Beckham.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at Mills River United Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Thompson and Rev. Paige Ann Miller will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mills River Life Enrichment Center, 137 Old Turnpike Road., Mills River, NC 28759 or Four Seasons Compassion for Life Elizabeth House, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731.
