Barbara Elizabeth Maier Garcia, 75, of Hendersonville passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living following a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer. A native of New York, Barbara lived in Charleston, SC before moving to Henderson County eight years ago. She was a daughter of the late Marcel Charles and Hazel Mae Thompson Maier, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Aimee Garcia in 1988 and a sister, Arlene Morningstar in 2015. She was a graduate of Onteora High School, TTC and Roper Nursing. Barbara worked as a nurse at various hospitals in Highlands and Charleston, SC, retiring in 2010. Prior to her nursing career, Barbara held many unique jobs. She was a Boiler Maker for the Charleston Naval Shipyard, campaign facilitator for congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr. and even worked on semi-conductors for Apollo 11. She was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include her husband, MGSgt William Eugene Garcia, USMC Retired of Maui, HI; children, Debi Garcia Smith and her husband James of Edneyville, David Garcia of Charleston, SC, Emile Anuhea Dugan and her husband George Bradley Dugan of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Josselyn E. O’Brien and her fiancé Chris Hinds, Teddy E. O’Brien and his wife Amber; great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Tytus, and Thorin O’Brien; sisters, Patricia Conway, Jean Nelson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 am Monday, September 7, 2015 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park Bldg. 1, Asheville, NC 28801.

Once, I remember when I won the essay contest "Why your grandmother is the best in the world" , in the entire school and went on to Columbia and we made a grand trip out of it.
