Flat Rock – Betty Jean Cox, 88, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Pardee Hospital following a period of declining health.

A resident of Henderson County for most of her life, Mrs. Cox retired from the Henderson County Public Schools System and continued doing work as a seamstress for many years, making clothes for her family, as well as for the family of Carl Sandburg.  She enjoyed being around people, gardening, cooking and doing her crossword puzzles.  Mrs. Cox was a charter founding member of Victory Baptist Church on Orchard Road, where she also served faithfully as Sunday School teacher.  She will always be remembered as the epitome of Proverbs 31, The Virtuous Woman, for “her price is far above rubies.”

Mrs. Cox was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mae Allman, and the wife of the late Douglas Cox, Sr.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are her children: Douglas Cox, Jr. and wife Pamela, Jimmy Cox and wife Tina, and Sandra Hoots and husband Mickey; seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services for the family will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at Tracy Grove Baptist Church.

Shuler Funeral Home is honored to assist Mrs. Cox’s family with funeral arrangements.

Aunt Betty Jean was such a sweet, kind cheerful, talented person. I will never forget the love she showed me when I was a little girl. Every memory I have of her is wonderful. <3 What a blessing to have known her!!!! The world was better because she was in it. I am sure she has impacted so many during her life here on earth. I am looking forward to seeing her and my mom, her sister, along with the rest of the Allman family one day!
