Betty Sanders, 89, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Spring Arbor West assisted living facility after an extended illness.
She is survived by son Charles Conway and his wife Victoria of Lilburn, GA, and daughter Fern Conway Carter and her husband Dan of Hendersonville, as well as stepdaughters Lisa Sanders Doud and Susan Sanders Giglia. Also surviving are grandchildren Lauren Conway Baker and Seth Carter, as well as six step-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren.
Born Betty Jane Truncer in Woodbury, NJ, on March 20, 1922, she was raised in Berlin, NJ, and Cape May Court House, NJ. Betty received a B.S. degree from New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) in 1943 and married Charles M. Conway of Philadelphia, PA, that same year. During the ensuing years she lived with her family in Haddon Heights, NJ, and Barrington, NJ, and was a Home Economics teacher. Widowed in 1970, she became a real estate broker in Haddonfield, NJ. In 1977, Betty married Mike Sanders of Cherry Hill, NJ, and moved with him to Devon, PA, until 1991, when they relocated to Hendersonville. Widowed again in 1994, she led an active life as a volunteer and traveled with friends.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville, 2021 Kanuga Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, 28731, or to the UUFH.
