Clinton Phelps Merrell of Gerton, NC, died peacefully at home Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the age of 89.
Serving honorably in the Army Air Corps during WWII, he was awarded the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and Silver Star.
Mr. Merrell lived in West Palm Beach for 35 years. He was building superintendent for the Norton Gallery and School of Art. Upon retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Gerton, NC where he was a member of the Gerton Volunteer Fire Department and a deacon in the Bearwallow Baptist Church. In his later years he came to stay with his daughter and son-in-law in Garner, NC where he could be near his family and see
his great-grandchildren nearly every day.
He is survived by his daughter Cynthia; grandchildren, Allen and Patricia Williams; and great-grandchildren, Megan Nicole Williams and Jessica Sahara Snyder.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Bearwallow Baptist Church with the Reverend Roy Rigdon officiating. Burial will follow with Full Military Honors in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
