Carol S. Wood, 85, of Hendersonville, NC, formerly of Liverpool, NY passed away November 25, 2011 at St. Annís Hospital, Westerville OH. Born May 4, 1926 in Syracuse, NY, she was a 1944 graduate of North High School. She worked as a long distance operator for the New York Telephone Company and married the love of her life, the late Robert J. ìWoodyî Wood, on September 16, 1948. She left the telephone company in 1950 to start her family.

She later began a new career by attending Maria Regina College in Syracuse where she graduated summa cum laude and class valedictorian in 1975 with a degree in social work. She was employed as a teaching assistant with the Liverpool Central Schools and as a case worker for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services.

In 1980, she and Woody moved to Western North Carolina to ìretireî and worked for another 25 years as a case worker for the Hendersonville County Department of Social Services and as a volunteer for Interfaith Assistance Ministry. She and Woody also worked as property managers in their community of Indian Springs Park. She volunteered as a docent at the Carl Sandburg House and at the Edneyville Library where they made their home until they moved to Hendersonville in 2007.

She is survived by her twin sister Carolyn Eaton, her sons Harold (Carolyn) and Alan (Kathleen); daughter April (Carolyn); grandsons Erich, Ryan (Elizabeth), Stephen (Jennifer), and Kyle; and beloved great-granddaughters Avery and Ehryn.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday December 2, 2011 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel at the Shuler Funeral Home, 125 Orrís Camp Road, in Hendersonville (828-693-5220) with a calling hour at 10:00 AM. A private interment will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

Carolís family would like to thank the staff of The Village at Westerville and St. Annís Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Interfaith Assistance Ministry, 210 Ehringhausen Street, P.O.Box 2562, Hendersonville NC 28793-2562.
