David Allan Hepburn, 81, of Fletcher, NC died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Beckyís Rest Home in Fletcher.
He was a native of Manchester, England and had been a resident of Henderson County since 1992.
He served as Chief Engineer on submarines in the Royal Navy for thirty years including the submarine that provided the turning point of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of St. John in the Wilderness. A recovering alcoholic, he had been sober for over 25 years and was a very active member of AA. He was instrumental in the recovery of many alcoholics and an inspiration to the membership.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie Hepburn of Hendersonville; two sons, John Hepburn and Ian Hepburn and two brothers, Keith and Tony Hepburn, all of England; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 PM Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Unitarian Universalist Church. Military Honors will be conducted by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14. The family will receive guests at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW Post 5206 Ladies Auxiliary, 900 N. Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
