Deborah Dickens Berger

December 7, 1957 - July 5, 2018
Deborah Dickens Berger

Deborah (Debbie) Dickens Berger passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2018, at the Elizabeth House after her long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her two sons, Jared Berger and wife Rebecca, and Nolan Berger and wife Ashton; grandchildren, Hadlynn and Hudson Berger; brother, Greg Dickens and wife Traci; sister Gayle McCrary and husband Robert; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Charles Dickens and her mother, Judith Dickens.

Debbie was born December 7, 1957 in Lexington, NC and moved to Hendersonville with her family in 1973. She was a graduate of East Henderson High School in 1976 and Isothermal Community College in 1978. Debbie was the Vice President Trust Officer of First Citizens Bank. She was a devoted worker who truly cared about each and every one of her customers. Debbie was an active member at Living Water Church and volunteer at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission. She made it a point to always give back to her church and community. However her number one priority in life was always her family.

In addition, Debbie was always willing to provide a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on to anyone in need. Even in the midst of her treatment, she put the needs of others above her own. She maintained a selfless demeanor all her life, even after her diagnosis. She was much loved by her family and community and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

In the end, she found comfort in her faith and knew without a doubt that all was well with her soul.
A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Living Water Baptist Church. Rev. Tony Birkhead will officiate. The family will receive guests from 1:30 to 2:30 pm at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, P.O. Andy Waters says:
Debbie was like a sister to me. She took me under her wings in 1991 when First Citizens Bank (my employer) purchased her employer, First Federal. We worked together in Hendersonville for about 3 months but we continued our friendship after I moved via First Citizens to Wilmington and back to Raleigh. I moved to Lexington, KY in 2004 and always looked forward to seeing Debbie every year at the Trust Advisors Forum in Pinehurst. Debbie was a godly, Christian saint. I will miss her but I know she is now worshipping at Jesus’ feet and is much happier and fully healed of cancer.

    Lana Wilde says:
I have known Debbie for more than fifteen years, and immediately recognized Debbie to be a true woman of God. Can't say I ever saw her in a state other than calm and soft-spoken, and always trusting that God had things under control. When I last saw Debbie, we talked about her mother having recently passed away and how much she was missed, I can imagine a happy reunion in Heaven! Debbie was a fine Christian model for women in the work place. She was greatly respected and will be greatly missed.

    Denise says:
I am very sorry for the recent loss of your dear loved one, Deborah. I have a brief encouraging message I would like to share with you from the Bible. The Bible can be a great source of both comfort and hope during this most difficult time in your lives. For an example, at Revelation 21:3-5 it assures us that the day is soon coming when our most loving Heavenly Father is going to wipe away the tears of sorrow from our eyes and that even pain and death will be no more. I hope after reading this it will be of some comfort to each one of you. If later you would like to learn more from the Bible about why we die or why does a loving God allow so much suffering and injustice, please feel free to go to the website: www.jw.org to find satisfying answers.
