Dennis Woodrow Mathis, 64, of Flat Rock, went to be with our heavenly Father on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
He was a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Mathis and was also preceded in death by his stepmother Zelda Mathis; brothers Phillip Mathis and Nehemiah and Roger Edmonds; sisters, Carmal Lee Mathis, Patricia Baldwin, Juanita Lanning and Lois Mathis.
Dennis was a carpenter by trade, enjoyed woodworking and loved to be fishing on any riverbank. He also loved his church, Kelly Memorial Baptist, where he was a longtime Deacon. His greatest love was his family and his grandbabies.
Survivors include by his loving wife of 46 years, Sue Brackett Mathis, daughters, Cindy ìSageî Hargus and husband Alan of Robbinsville, Denise Gillispie and husband Wendell of Rutherfordton; son, Neal Mathis and wife Juli of Forest City; sisters, Carolyn Davis of Morganton, Barbra Kilby of Arden, Susan Dixon, Phyllis Metcalf both of Fletcher and Frankie Allen of Hendersonville and brother, Odeen Edmonds. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Dennis will be greatly missed by all that ever met him, for his smile, warm hugs and jokes.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Kelly Memorial Baptist Church with Revs. Doug Carroll, Rick Harris and Bill Brackett officiating. Burial will follow in Hooperís Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kelly Memorial Church. At other times the family may be reached at the home.
