Donald Edward Beck, 74 of Mills River, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at his home. A native of Winston-Salem, he was a son of the late William D. and Ruth Sites Beck. He had been an area resident for 50 years.

He served in the US Marine Corps and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Duke University and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. He was a Forest Ecologist for the US Forest Service, retiring in 1995. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the United Methodist church.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Helen Nixon Beck; two sons Michael Beck of Jacksonville, Fla. and Jon Beck of Asheville; two granddaughters Sally and Lucy Beck of Jacksonville; one sister Melba B. Hoover of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; one brother William D. Beck, Jr. of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
