Donald S. Hoogstra, 95, of Carolina Village, died Tuesday, June 7, at Pardee Hospital . A native of Detroit , Michigan , he had lived in Birmingham , Michigan prior to moving to Hendersonville in 1978. He was a graduate of the Detroit Institute of Technology and was employed by General Motors for 42 years, retiring as Director of Raw Material Procurement. A prize-winning photographer and avid watercolor artist, he also was a 15-year volunteer for Four Seasons Compassion for Life, a volunteer at the Free Clinic, the Hendersonville Community Co-op and served on the board of Interfaith Assistance Ministry. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. His first wife, Lois Hoogstra, passed away in 1995.
Mr. Hoogstra is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jean Hoogstra; a daughter, Jan Sansom of Detroit, Michigan; a son, Craig Hoogstra and his wife Marcia of Washington, DC; a sister, Ruth Hoffman and her husband Jack of Pinellas Park, Florida; four grandchildren, Ken, Karen, Corrie and Dirk, and nine great-grandchildren, Justin, Starr, Riley, Kasi, Owen, Ava, Cecilia, Tanner and Wyatt.
A memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday, June 11, at Carolina Village Hall. Rev. Mark Stanley will officiate. The family will receive friends at a reception at Carolina Village following the service.
