E. Hayden Thompson, 84, of Hendersonville passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008 in his sleep at his home in the Dana Hill Community.

Mr. Thompson was born in Concord, NC on November 1, 1923. He graduated from Winecuff High School in Concord in 1941.

He enlisted and served in the Navy from 1941 to 1946, serving on the USS Brooklyn and the USS Birmingham as an Aviation Ordinanceman. While serving, he was involved in the invasion of North Africa as well as action in the Pacific region. Mr. Thompson was recalled to active duty from 1950-1953 while serving in the naval reserve.

After being discharged from the Navy a second time he attended Kingís Business College in Charlotte, NC. He was employed as a salesman, first by Campbell Soup and later by Noxell Corporation.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Lois B. Thompson of Hendersonville; a son, Col. Stevan Thompson, his wife Madge Gay of Silver Springs, Maryland, and their two children Kenneth Thompson of Nashville, Tennessee and Joanna Thompson of Greenville, NC; two stepdaughters Susan Purvis of Chattanooga, TN and Lynn Hall of New Port Richey, FL; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 1:30pm in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home with Reverend Edison Heard officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
