Gifts & Memorial Donations

Elizabeth L. “Betty” Smith, 86, of Hendersonville went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, September 23, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Serepta Osteen Layne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Floyd “Jeter” Smith and brothers, Bruce Layne and his wife, Dot and Edward Layne and his wife, Lois.

Betty was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church and worked as a lunchroom lady for Balfour Elementary for 25 years before retiring in 1990. She enjoyed gardening, pickling, cooking and baking. Although everything she made was delicious, her family particularly loved her biscuits and zucchini bread and jokingly named her kitchen “Betty’s Bar and Grill.”

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Freeman and her husband, Tony; granddaughter, Brooke Laughter and her husband, Frankie; great-granddaughter, Payton; and nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, September 27 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The Reverend Steve Scoggins will officiate. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, 6-8 PM at Shuler Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cherry Springs Village for the loving, tender care they provided to Betty.
