Ernest O. Wunderlich, 93, of Hendersonville, NC, went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 20, 2009 after an extended illness.

He was born on February 11, 1916 in Saxony, Germany. He resided in the Chicago area, Ellisville, MO, and Matteson, IL before moving to Hendersonville 30 years ago.

He was a graduate of Concordia College in River Forest, IL, and received his Masterís Degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Before retiring in 1981, he had enjoyed a career spanning 42 years that included service as a Lutheran school teacher, principal, and church organist.

He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at an early age and served faithfully throughout his life. The Lutheran Church at large asked him to serve on the Board of Directors of the Northern Illinois District; as vice-chairman of its teachersí conference; on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Education Association; and as secretary of the committee on administration for the Synodís Convention in 1968. Since moving to Hendersonville, he had been a member and former elder of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helene Wunderlich nee Jirgal of Hendersonville; three children, Robert (Diane), of Matteson, IL; Carole Steverson of Arden, NC; and Kenneth (Kathleen)of Trophy Club, TX; seven grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda, and brother, Kurt.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church. Pastor Larry Rabon will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, 2606 Chimney Rock Rd., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
