Frances Hendricks Mitchem

Frances Hendricks Mitchem, 89, of Brevard passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Laurels of Hendersonville following an extended illness. A native of Transylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Crockett and Ester Gravely Hendricks. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Carl and Ollie Hendricks. Frances had lived in Chapel Hill, NC, Atlanta, GA, Savannah, GA, Jackson, MS and Birmingham, AL while supporting her husband Mike’s career, prior to them retiring back to the mountains of Brevard.

Frances was a graduate of Brevard High School, and then went on to receive her degree from Brevard College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brevard and loved both the mountains and the beach. She was very sociable, had a great sense of humor and loved to be active. She enjoyed hosting friends and family and took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Frances was an amazing mother and grandmother, as well as a fantastic cook. Her specialty was her biscuits and organic oatmeal cookies. She enjoyed golfing and had even recorded a hole-in-one during her playing years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, E.C. “Mike” Mitchem; daughters, Linda Meier (Lee) of San Francisco, CA and Dianne Hill (Bill) of Brevard, NC; son, David Mitchem (Marsha) of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Ben (Candice) and Mike (Leslie) Meier, Josh (Lori) Hill, Katie and Lee Mitchem; great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Madden Meier; nieces, Kathy and Amy Hendricks and nephew, Edward Mitchem.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church of Brevard, NC with Pastor Mike Holder officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am prior to the service.
