Gifts & Memorial Donations

George L. Nystrom, 89, of Hendersonville died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Carolina Village Medical Center among friends.

Born in Plainville, CT and raised there by his mother, Gertrude, and maternal grandfather, Henry Castle, he attended the University of Maine in Orono. There he met his wife Dorothy (Wing) during their freshman year. He graduated with a chemical engineering degree in June of 1941 and was commissioned an ensign in the US Naval Reserve, serving throughout WWII in various gunnery and ordinance capacities due to his engineering background. He spent D-day aboard the USS Bayfield at Utah Beach, and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Commander. After stints with General Electric and Packard Motor Corp., he spent the remainder of his career with the Great Northern Paper Company of Maine from 1958 until his retirement in 1984. He began in Millinocket, ME as an engineer and ended in Stamford, CT as the director of Customer Technical Service.

George gave his all to raising a family, all three boys following in his footsteps as Eagle Scouts and then as devoted husbands and fathers. Dorothy and he retired to Hendersonville, partly because of his love of the outdoors. With his friend Harry Kinstler, he hiked the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, ME. He was predeceased by Dorothy in 2005. They were active members of the Carolina Village commmunity, who will remember him for the many birthday cards he distributed over the years. His family will miss his friendly spirit and especially the weekly letters which bound them together throughout their lives.

He leaves his three sons and their wives: Harry and Liz Nystrom of Spring, TX, Jon and Nancy Nystrom of W. Hartford, CT, and Peter and Kathy Nystrom of Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren Timothy and Donna Nystrom, Rebecca and Marcus Trimble, Matthew, Alice, Christopher, and Jon Nystrom; and great grandchildren Sophia and Joseph Trimble, and Andrew and Zachary Nystrom. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association.
