Flat Rock-

Colonel George “Rick” Malick, USAF RET. lost his battle with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia on March 27, 2017. True to his character, he fought bravely and lovingly throughout his struggles. He will be missed by many people who met him and cared for him throughout his life.

As a highly-accomplished fighter pilot, Rick’s Air Force career spanned 30 years. He served as Squadron Commander for the 89th F-16 Fighter Squadron Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. His most cherished accolades came from his student pilots who overwhelmingly voted him “Best Instructor“ again and again. Rick cared deeply for the pilots who dared bravely to preserve our freedom here at home and around the world.

Rick and his wife Patty would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this year. Patty said it best, “We had great chemistry.” Son Ricky often referred to his father as his hero. Rick’s striking smile and soft humor captivated those around him, especially his nieces and nephews.

In addition to Patty and Ricky, Rick is survived by brother, Gary (MaryAnn) Malick. Preceding Rick in death were his parents, George and Rose Malick, and sister, Janet Scarpitti.

Patty extends her gratitude to all the caretakers and medical professionals who assisted her in caring for Rick. Their love and respect in this journey were invaluable.

Services will be held 2pm Monday, April 3, 2017 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.

What a precious friend we have lost. Rick kept that twinkle in his eye and huge smile on his face through even the toughest times. We will remember the fun times we shared and smile when we think of him.

Rick was such a remarkable friend. He was funny, caring and a gifted Aviator. He was the Best Man at our wedding so many years ago. We remember this "Datsun Z" driver with much love and cherish old memories. Our love to Pat & Ricky and family.

    Sharon Erli says:
So very sorry to hear about Rick! I had the honor and privilege of working for "Radio Rick" back in our 906th Fighter Group days. Rick, Jim Lech and I were the Stan Eval Team! He was always a friend, never a boss! Rick has had a long hard road, as well as Pat, these last few years! He's at peace now, and to quote Rick, "as it should be!"
