Gladys L. Small

Gladys Lowery Small, 87, of Hendersonville, NC passed into the arms of her Savior, Jesus, Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Life Care Center of Hendersonville.

Born in Lancaster, SC, she was a daughter of the late Fred Henry and Lois Garris Lowery. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Harold Max Small who died June 15, 1978; her sisters, Ella Ruth Simpson and Glendora Horton; and brothers, Fred Lowery and Joe Lowery.

Gladys was a church secretary for many years at Holland Avenue Baptist Church in Cayce, SC, Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia and Auburn United Methodist Church in Auburn, AL. She was a fraternity house mother of Phi Kappa Delta at Auburn University. Gladys loved singing in the choir, baking, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren who all adored her. She attended the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville.

She is survived by her three children, Maxie Small and wife, Mary, of Hendersonville, Michael Small of Butler, MO, and Myra Girard and husband, Scott, of Opelika, AL; eight grandchildren, Vanessa Fleming, Trey Small, Josh Small, Katie Lenarcic, Harrison Thomas, Lowery Thomas, McRae Thomas and Hobie Hill; brother, Clyde Lowery of West Columbia, SC; eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of LifeCare for their excellent care of Gladys over the past four years.

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia, SC.
