Hazel Ballard

Gifts & Memorial Donations

Hazel Rebecca Mashburn Ballard, 74, of Hendersonville went home Tuesday, May 30, 2017 following an extended illness.  A native of Henderson County, she was a daughter of the late Norman H. and Vernie Bogan Mashburn.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Jamie W. Ballard, her two sisters, Elnora Huskins and Dixie Sain, and her beloved canine companion, “Beastie”.

Hazel was employed with Carolina Accounting for 28 years as a bookkeeper before illness forced her into retirement just last year.  She was of the Baptist faith and was an active member and former president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Hedrick-Rhodes Post 5206. Hazel marched in Labor Day parades and handed out poppies on Memorial Day. She volunteered many years at bingo and other fund- raising activities with her VFW friends and considered them family.

Hazel loved her dog, her family, her country, and the Dallas Cowboys. She was a voice of reason in a world of chaos, a mediator, and a pillar of strength for her family. Hazel was a selfless and inspirational woman who lived by example. She showed us that anything can be accomplished with determination and hard work. Her positive spirit and strong work ethic will live on for generations.

Hazel was humble, compassionate, and generous. She taught her family to love and to give unconditionally, and that God will always provide. Her deep and simple faith sustained her through life’s journey and carried her to Heaven at its end. She will be missed not only by her family, but by countless others who called her friend.

She is survived by her children, Lisa B. Gundersen and husband, Aaron, Brett A. Ballard, and Timothy Jason “T.J.” Ballard and wife, Brooke; grandkids, Aaron J. Gundersen, Jessamine A. Gundersen, Elias J. Gundersen, R. Anamarie Gundersen, Ezekiel D. Ballard and Patience I. Ballard; and great-grandchildren, A. Asher Gundersen and M. Oliver Wright. She was also like a mother to Jill Gorman Rosenbalm, Angie Gorman Peterson, and Joy Gorman Cole.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017, drop-in from 12-3 PM at the home of Lisa and Aaron Gundersen, 4026 Howard Gap Road, Saluda, NC 28773.  The family had a private entombment in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VFW Hedrick-Rhodes Post 5206, 900 N. Main St., Hendersonville, NC 28792 in memory of Hazel Ballard.
