Jean Berry, 96, of Hendersonville, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Carolina Village Care Center.
Jean was born on December 14, 1917 in Urbana, IL. She was the daughter of the late Louis Dale and Hazel Westerman Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clyde M. Berry, whom she married in 1940.
Jean was a graduate summa cum laude of the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. For many years she transcribed books into braille for the blind and supported numerous young people through scholarships and other support. She wrote beautiful, thoughtful and wise stories and essays.
She is survived by her son, Kent Berry of Chapel Hill; two daughters, Dr. Jesse Joad and spouse Dr. Ann Bonham of Washington DC, and Lynn Berry and husband Howard Goldberg of Seattle, WA; three grandchildren, Zoria, Lisa, and David Berry; and former daughter-in-law, Susan Berry.
She will be missed by all who knew her for her kind gentle spirit, generous wisdom and sense of humor.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
