Joanne S. Whitaker, 71 of Mills River, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Park Ridge Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was a daughter of the late George and Hassie Lance Suttles. She retired from the US Postal Service and previously worked for the Henderson County Soil Conservation Service. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband of 45 years, Harry Whitaker; two daughters Lavonne Fulle and husband Robert, and Kim Carpenter and husband Phil; three grandsons Kyle, Ethan and Hunter Fulle; one granddaughter Katie Carpenter all of Mills River; two sisters Lorraine Thomas of Mills River and Susie King of Lenoir; one brother Martin Suttles of Mills River; several nieces and nephews; one special great-niece Brandy Whitaker; and close family friend Jason Davis.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00am Friday in Whitaker-Moore Cemetery. Rev. Greg Bell and Jason Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Thursday at Shuler Funeral Home and at all other times will be at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 112 Rayís Place Lane, Mills River, NC 28759.
