John K. Thompson, 58 of Polk County, formerly of Hendersonville, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the VA Medical Center Hospice in Asheville following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Topeka, Kansas he was the son of Jane McKinney of Hendersonville. His sister Pat Rose also preceded him in death.
A US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he retired from Vulcan Materials where he had worked for 30 years. He was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother is his daughter Kerrie Verstrate and granddaughter Grace Verstrate both of Hendersonville; his uncle and aunt, Frank and Carol Erickson; his nephew Brian Rose; several cousins; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm on Thursday in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Hyder will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service. Military honors will be rendered by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.
