John Rieger, of Carolina Village, passed away Sunday, December, 30, at Pardee Hospital. Born in Bischofszell, Switzerland, he was a son of the late John F. and Maria K. Rieger. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gene H. Rieger, who died in 2010 and by a brother and two sisters. He had lived in Woodbury, CT and Teaneck, NJ before moving to Hendersonville in 1983. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University. After receiving his commission at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, he served aboard the USS Pensacola in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He was Divisional Manager for Research and Development; Industrial Products with Uniroyal, Inc., for whom he held several patents. He was a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and the Director of the Homebound Department. He was a member of the Gideons International, a Sunday School Teacher in New Jersey and Connecticut and a board member of the Hendersonville Rescue Mission.

Mr. Rieger is survived by his son, Bradford J. Rieger of Branford, CT; two daughters, Karen R. Laidlaw of Hillsdale, NJ and Ellen R. Bryan of Scottsdale, AZ; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 5, at the Carolina Village Hall. Rev. Wally Shamburger will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Friendship Cemetery, Landisville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 312 Fifth Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC 28739 or to the Gideons International, P.O.
