John R. Johnson, 86 of Hendersonville passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Elizabeth House following a short illness.
A native of Woodbridge, NJ, he was the son of the late John and Genevieve Johnson. He proudly served aboard the LST464 in the US Navy during WWII. He was a Supervisor for the US Postal Service before his retirement in 1980, and relocated to Henderson County approximately 30 years ago.
John was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7184, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, and Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206. In his free time, he enjoyed helping out with the Boy Scouts and loved to read and watch sports.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy Tirpak Johnson; son, Thomas R. Johnson and wife, Mary; sister-in-law, RoseAnn Mikilitus and husband, Edward; grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Lucas, Parker and Tanner; niece, Jeannette Senko; and nephew, Edward Mikilitus III.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 2 PM, Friday, November 25, 2011 at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with interment following at Shepherd Memorial Park. Graveside Military Honors will be rendered by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14 and the NC National Guard Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM ñ 12 PM Friday at Shuler Funeral Home.
