Katherine Dovie Dalton McCombs, 72, of Hendersonville, NC, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at her home after a long struggle with illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late Flave D. ìBillî Dalton, former Henderson County Sheriff, and Rachel Dovie Rouse Dalton. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Bobbie Annette McCombs and two brothers, Douglas Dalton and Buddy Dalton.

She graduated from Etowah High School and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. She was a registered nurse and assisted her husband in his businesses, most recently Mountain Man Produce in Hendersonville. She was a longtime member of Shawís Creek Baptist Church.

A woman who never met a stranger, she cherished the time spent in her community and with her family. She shared her life with others by putting their needs before her own.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Bobby Daniel McCombs of Hendersonville; two sons, Gregory Dalton McCombs and wife, Tyria, and Richard Byron ìBearî McCombs and wife, Traci, all of Hendersonville; five grandchildren, Danielle McCombs and two sets of twins, Cassidy and Trinity McCombs and Jackie and Janie McCombs; two great-grandchildren, Whitney McCombs and Joseph Parker; two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Billie Schell, both of Horse Shoe; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Pastor Zollie Ward will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 ñ 9 PM Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Shuler Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Bear and Traci McCombs.

    I was so sorry to hear about Katherine. I am so lucky to have had her for my cousin and friend, all these years. I will miss stopping by to talk and laugh with her.She always had a smile on her face and was laughing.She was " One of a kind." We will keep the family in our prayers.
