Louis Edward Hughes, 68, of Fletcher, N.C. departed this life on March 3, 2018 surrounded by his family. A native of Jackson, Michigan, he proceeded in death by his mother Barbara Drechnowicz, father Earl Eugene Hughes and brother Earl Henry Hughes. He served in the US Army, 3rd Armored Division, from 1966-69, and spent most of his career as an office equipment technician. He owned copier businesses in Madisonville, TN and Canton, NC for several years and worked throughout the United States during his career. He was known for his forthright nature, intellect and love of travel.
A talented musician, artist and writer, Louis played music for eight years in Key West and the Florida Keys with partners Gary Blodgett and Scott Harper, and was known as Louie, Louie the Harmonica Man. He also took great joy in sailing and making music for special needs children with Leonardo Bicunus and the Making Waves Band of Chicago. His beautiful artwork was sold in Key West and Western North Carolina.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn of the home; sons, David Hughes and wife Joy of Candler, NC, Nathan Hughes and wife Angie of Canton, NC; daughter, Tamara Hunter and husband Robert of Waynesville, NC; sisters, Lorraine Hughes McIntosh and husband Dan, Katrina Strub and husband Tom; brother, Frank Drechnowicz and wife Lorrae, all of Jackson, MI; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Hunter, Samantha, Shelby, Cody, Brennan, Chevi, Megan and Maddox; and great-granddaughters, Kaydence, Jordin and Andromeda were a source of immense pride.
A visitation will be held from 12-1pm on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Shuler Funeral Home with a private time of remembrance to follow. Burial will be at Jenkins Cemetery in Robbinsville, NC.
