Louise “Lou” Huffman Moore, 86, of Mills River passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at The Elizabeth House. Born in Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Ruth Hatchett Huffman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph “Doc” Moore who died in 2009, and by her sister, Ann Tunsberg.
Lou was a true daughter of western North Carolina. Growing up in a variety of Forest Service Cabins throughout the Smokey Mountains sparked a love in her for the area’s native plants and animals, especially birds. An avid reader, Lou studied books and stories about the history and folklore of the North Carolina mountains.
Lou’s passion for local arts and crafts was evidenced by her home being filled with floral arrangements created from indigenous plants, vines, and flowers. She also had a green thumb with many of her house plants blooming year round.
Lou’s social calendar was constantly booked and every weekend included at least one dinner with friends or a family gathering. Friends would drop by her office any day of the week to join her for lunch or just to visit for a while. One of Lou’s great joys was picnics with her sisters. The families would meet up in the forest on Sunday afternoons and picnic on delicious homemade treats then wade in the rivers or hike the mountain trails
.
Lou adored her grandchildren and made sure she had plenty of toys and sweets for when they came to visit. Outside there were dogs to pet, cows to feed, and plenty of tractors to play on.
Lou’s loving spirit and joyful personality has left a legacy of delightful memories and positive energy for everyone that knew her.
She is survived by her children, Jerry Moore and wife, Barbara; Bobby Moore; and Linda Moore Miller and husband, Rusty; grandchildren, Chris Moore, Graydon Miller and Suzanne Miller; step-grandchildren, Emily Jones and Kelly Stepp; and great-grandchildren, Jackson Stepp, Landon Jones, Emerson Stepp, Preston and Hudson Jones; three sisters, Betty Richards of Chattanooga, TN, Mary Osborne and Martha Stamey, both of Brevard; and special family member, Alice Krebbs of Mills River.
A funeral service will be held at 3 pm Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Mills River United Methodist Church. Reverend Ashley Crowder-Stanley will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Whitaker-Moore Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 PM Sunday at the church.
