    Marvin Owings says:
Betty, I am so sorry I can’t attend Ed’s memorial service this Saturday because of prior commitments. Ed was a wonderful man, a man from the first time you met him you knew that he was kind and thoughtful. Some one you wanted to know to know better because of his life time experience. I was my honor to know Ed when he enrolled in the Master Pomologist Course to learn more about the science of tree fruit production. He was one of the “regular crew” who volunteered at the Apple Variety Block consistently ever Tuesday for over twenty years. Working in the Block: planting new varieties, training, pruning, harvesting fruit and evaluating post-harvest fruit quality. Through his work and others, local growers through the NC Cooperative Extension Center helped educate local growers about how apple and peach varieties preform in our region of WNC. Because of his dedication, he was honored by the NC Cooperative Extension Service as Volunteer of the Year! Late in his life, because of medical issues we saw Ed less and less at the Block. Even if he couldn’t join us, he would tell Betty “It’s Tuesday morning, I must get ready to go to the Block”! Yes, Ed is miss by all who knew him. But, I know we will meet again, when we pick up our pruners and continue working together again. Ed, RIP Your friend, Marvin
