Margaret Anne P. Gardner of Hendersonville, NC, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Universal Health Care of Fletcher.

She was born in 1924 in Savannah, GA, to Mary Agnes Chapman and Clarence A. Pinckney. She grew up at The Point and attended school at Bluffton, SC. Anne met Richard W. Gardner of Westfield, MA, in 1942 while he was in the Army patrolling the coast of South Carolina. In January 1943, they were married at Marble Collegiate Church in New York City by Norman V. Peale.

Dick and Anne were married 65 years. Theirs was an enduring marriage tested by periodic separation while Dick was overseas in the Army, first WW II, Korea, and then Vietnam. She was a strong Army wife who ìheld down the fortî and wrote to him every day while he was away. She provided a loving home for their two girls and Dick to come home to.

Anne believed in being there for people. She was a hard worker, always up first and last to retire. She worked as a Gray Lady, a Volunteer for the Red Cross and was a constant correspondent to family and friends. She was a member of the DAR and loved doing genealogical research and sharing information with others. Anne and Dick attended many Elderhostel classes all over the country, adding to their many friends. They both loved to travel, going to New England to see family and visiting different parts of the United States.

Anne was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret H. Gardner of Hendersonville and Maryjane Rhett (James) of Monte Vista, CO; grandchildren, Wheeler Ballard (Melody) of Hendersonville; Dr. Maryanne A. Rhett (Colin) of Long Branch, NJ; and Sarah E. Rhett of Broomfield, Co; and her brother, John Pinckney.

She is happy at last to be reunited with her beloved Richard who died two years ago.
