Gifts & Memorial Donations

Mary Elizabeth Barker, 91, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017.

Her independent spirit empowered her to flourish outside of her native Greely, CO. Mary Barker enjoyed residencies at domestic and international military bases, Winter Park, FL., and the past 8 years of her life in Hendersonville, NC.

As the eldest daughter of the late Elmer and Alberta Elliott Sheller, she imparted her strength on younger generations; most notably her late siblings George and Keith Sheller, and Lila Timberlake. She thrived as the wife of the late CSM Arthur Samuel Barker of Virginia. She was also preceded in death by both sons, Robert Michael and Richard Durl Barker.

With a life-long eagerness for personal growth, she mastered many hobbies – needlepoint, crochet, and her rose garden – lead several social clubs, and worked diligently at Magnolia Gardens in Orlando, FL. She served as a role model by learning braille late in life, as a result of vision impairment. Additionally, she was fondly remembered for her annual nativity scene comprised of her collection of Fontanini figurines.

Mary is survived by Robert’s children: 1SG Michael (Sharon), Christopher, Patrick (Ashlynn), and Carollyn, along with Richard’s children: Sheila (Chris), Garret, Ivey, and Alexis (Joseph) Barker; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 10 am at Shuler Funeral Home in Hendersonville, NC. The family will receive friends and dedicated caregivers one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions on behalf of our dear beloved to the following: WNC Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215 or the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind, 355 Cedar Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
