Michael D. Short

Michael D. Short

On November 3rd, 2022, Michael Desmond Short Sr.,73, passed away in Hendersonville, NC due to a sudden heart attack. Mike was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who always had an open door at the homes he shared with his beloved Claudia Boozer-Short. Mike and Claudia fell in love late in life, and cherished the 12 years they were together, five of them as husband and wife. Recently they had been snowbirds traveling between their family homes in North Carolina and Maine.

“Dad” was an extraordinary listener who helped his children, Mike Short Jr. and Andrew Short, navigate life at every turn. We’ll always remember the life lessons he taught us and the donuts every Sunday morning. We’ll also remember the countless Boy Scout trips, fishing on Great Pond, and not-so-fun times cleaning up the yard of our childhood home in Medfield, MA.

He was quite the Dad.

Mike was a lifetime civil servant who spent his childhood traveling with his father, John Short, and family throughout the world for the US Army. He was extremely proud of being a Norwich University graduate. Mike began his career as a 1LT in the US Army Signal Corp in Mannheim, Germany. He then worked for many years in the Defense Contract Management Agency as a Quality Assurance Specialist, Program Analyst, and Program Integration Specialist. He completed his career as a Liaison Officer with the US Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command. While holding these positions, he served at the same time as a LTC in the Massachusetts National Guard. He was a passionate American who cared deeply about our country and protecting our democracy.

Mike “Dad and Pa” Short loved his time most of all in Maine while sitting with Claudia on the deck by Great Pond, entertaining family and friends, or playing with his granddaughters. He would gladly take a bad weather day in Maine over any day anywhere else.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, John Short and Lillian Short. He is survived by his wife, Claudia Boozer-Short; former wife, Mary F. Short; son, Michael Short,Jr., and wife, Victoria Parsons; son, Andrew Short, and wife, Collette Short; granddaughters, Emaline Short and Maren Short; brother, John Short, and sister-in-law, Sharon Short; sister, Peggy (Short) Sierakowski, and brother-in-law, John Sierakowski; sister, Kathy (Short) Benson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mike’s memorial service will be held this summer at his beloved Great Pond in Maine.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Belgrade Lakes Association would be a wonderful way to remember him: Belgrade Lakes Association

    Julie Boozer says:
As Claudia's Boozer aunt, our children Nathaniel, Joanna and Wes send our sincere condolences to Claudia and Mike's family. He was a very caring relative as demonstrated by he and Claudia driving from NH to Gettysburg to say good-bye to her Uncle Bob (my husband) just before he died (2011). Wes and I experienced the wonderful opportunity to assemble with Claudia's sisters, Margaret, Catherine and Barbara to see Mike and Claudia exchange wedding vows on the dock of his beloved Great Pond in Maine. We were very honored to have Mike join our Boozer family.

    Peg Sierakowski says:
My brother, Mike Desmond Short, was a stellar, trustworthy, honest and supportive brother who I will miss always. My sadness comes in waves, however, I like to think of Mike looking down to see how he can assist each of us through our lives. I will remember his smile and his laughter most of all. I feel blessed to have had this marvelous human being part of my life. The Col. would say, "Job well done, Michael!!"..... Love you forever, sister, Peg
