Gifts & Memorial Donations

Nancy Hall Baird, 82, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, from complications following a stroke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Baird, in 2012.

Born March 15, 1931 to Mr. and Mrs. W. Bigelow Hall, Nancy grew up in Needham, Massachusetts. As a Girl Scout, she developed a love for the outdoors, including swimming in mountain streams, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and camping in the New Hampshire mountains with her dad and sister Eleanor.

Nancy married Charles in 1955. She taught 3rd grade in Cincinnati while Charles completed his Masters Degree. In 1962, the couple moved with their young family to Madison, Wisconsin. There they raised a family which grew to six.

Nancy was truly a people person. She loved helping people, and her extensive volunteer work included delivering Meals on Wheels, counseling at the Pregnancy Information Center, faithfully donating blood to the American Red Cross, teaching Aqua Fitness exercise classes, and serving with her husband at the East Madison YMCA. Her continuing love for the outdoors found expression in family vacations to Door County and Fort Wilderness Christian Camp in northern Wisconsin.

In 1996, Nancy and Charles retired to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Here they devoted themselves tirelessly to charitable activities through their church, The Hendersonville Church of God, and also found time to travel widely, touring Alaska, Israel and Greece.

Nancy is survived by her four children: David Baird of Portage, WI, Katie Chavez of Charlotte, Mary Morkved of Fremont, CA, and John Baird of Middleton, WI, and by eight grandchildren, and by her sister Eleanor Yesmentes, of Boothbay, Maine.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Spring Arbor of Hendersonville for their loving care. A private burial is planned at the Western Carolina Veteranís Cemetery. Memorials are welcome to the Alzheimerís Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, D.C., 20090-6011.
