Ralph Edwin West, 81, of Hendersonville, NC, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Ira and Margaret West. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jerry West.

He received his BS and Masters degrees from Penn State. He retired as an engineer from JPL in 1989, and moved to Hendersonville. He was a member of Apple Country Woodcrafters and the Southern Lights Square Dance Club. He was an avid ham radio operator.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Hassold and husband, Chuck, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his sister, Lois Richards of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania; and loving best friend, Lois Brown of Hendersonville.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday, September 19, 2008, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Reverend Steve Jones will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

    Ralph was a great square dancer and we enjoyed dancing with him. He and Pat shared an interest in the mountain dulcimer. Frank remembers him attending our Sunday School class a few years ago. He was a good person. Our sympathy to his family and to Lois.
