Robert Alvin Gilbert, 89, of Hendersonville, NC passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, he was a son of the late John B. Gilbert and Myrtle Merrill Gilbert. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Neil Gilbert; stepmother, Jeanette Gilbert; sisters, Lois McCarson and Winifred Ann Gilbert; and brother, J.M. Gilbert.
Alvin served for four years in the US Marine Corps. He was employed by the NCDOT for 34 years, retiring January 1, 1981. Active in both his church and community, Alvin was a deacon and choir member at Beulah Baptist Church and a founding member and former chief of the Etowah Fire Department. He enjoyed camping, gardening and bluegrass music and was an avid hunter, especially fox hunting.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Patricia Bates Gilbert; sons, Ricky Gilbert (Sally), and Michael Gilbert (Jill); grandsons, Chris (Mandy), Patrick (Sabrina), Austin (Keisha), Ryan and Reilly Gilbert; and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Anna Lee, Cameron, Cooper and Autumn Gilbert.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church with Pastor Dewey Barnwell, Reverend Tony Galloway and Reverend Chris Gilbert officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Beulah Baptist Church.
