Robert Joseph Land, 81, beloved husband of Barbara, and a 20 year resident of Hendersonville, died Sunday, March 18, 2012.

He was born in Chicago, IL on July 12, 1930, and graduated from Chicago Foreman High School. After graduation, he worked for Kraft Foods, played the drums in a big band ensemble, and became an exceptional artist.

Bob enlisted in United States Air Force in 1950 during the Korean Conflict, and served four years. He served two of those years as an aircraft mechanic at Lajes Field, Azores. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

On February 9, 1957 Bob and Barb were married at St. Genevieveís Catholic Church in Chicago. They moved to Mt. Prospect, IL in 1960 as they started their family. In 1968, they moved with their three sons to Midland, MI where Bob worked as a draftsman for the Dow Chemical Company and later as Assistant Director of Operations at the Saginaw Community Hospital. During his time in Midland, Bob took up golf, which became a passion for him for the rest of his life. He also coached little league, drew cartoons for a local paper, became a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a lector/reader in the Catholic Church.

In 1982, Bob and Barb returned to Illinois, where Bob was selected as Director, Operations at Carle Hospital in Champaign and then in 1986 as Operations Director at St Johnís Hospital in Springfield IL. In 1992, Bob and Barb retired to Hendersonville NC. In retirement he produced many wildlife drawings and paintings and was a member of the Carolina Mountain Art Guild. He and his art works work were a beloved and familiar presence at the Guild and the Curb Market in Hendersonville.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Land; three sons, Mark Land and his wife Sharron, Doug Land and his wife Michele, and Kevin Land and his wife Natasha; and nine grandchildren, Melissa, Colin, Vaughn, Isabella, Taylor, Connor, Nathan, Rachel, and Owen Land.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Rev. John Salvas celebrating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the St. Francis Hall of the church.
