Robert “Bob” Lee Simpson, 94 of Flat Rock NC and St. Augustine FL, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2012 at the Hospice Bailey Family Center in St. Augustine FL. He was born on July 21, 1918 in Charlotte, NC, the son of Rosser Alexander Simpson and Lillie Elizabeth Abernathy Simpson. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Delores Blythe and Mrs. Phyllis Mozeley.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Jane Stamey Simpson; brother Alexander Durant Simpson of Huntersville NC; sister Barbara McQueen of Aiken SC; children Linda Ann Simpson, Karen Simpson Glenos(Jimmy), Alan Lee Simpson of St. Augustine FL; grandchildren Garrett K. Coleman (Heather) of Delray Beach FL, N. Andrew Coleman (Zabrina) of Winter Park FL, William “James” Glenos III (Nikki) of Chapel Hill NC, Brittany Lorraine Glenos of Jacksonvile FL, and great-grandchildren Cameron and Cooper Coleman of Delray Beach FL.
Bob was raised in Charlotte NC where he attended schools and then served during World War II, four and a half years in the Mighty Eighth Air Force 66th Bomb Squadron stationed in England, France and Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. He was awarded EAMET Campaign Medal with 9 bronze Stars. He met and married his sweetheart Betty in 1948. In 1956 they moved to Winter Park FL where he worked in administration at the US Postal Service until retiring in 1973. For the last 40 years, Betty and Bob enjoyed their retirement in their homes in Flat Rock, NC and in St. Augustine FL during the winters.
Bob was a thoughtful, devoted and loving husband, father, and friend and the consummate gentleman to all. He loved spending time with family and friends. He was an avid golfer, woodcarver of ducks and shore birds, gardener, collector of antiques, and enjoyed community service helping others and volunteering for many organizations.
Bob was an active member of Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, Master Mason and a member of Kedron Lodge, having received his Veterans Award for 60 years of service; member of: Hendersonville Shrine Club, Charlotte Scottish Rite Bodies, Oasis Shrine Temple, Crooked Creek Golf Club, Winter Park Country Club and the Opportunity House.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013 in Flat Rock, NC at Pinecrest Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m.
