Robert McCormick Cheadle, 95, of Flat Rock, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
Bob was born in Rockford, Illinois on August 3, 1922. As a teenager, he moved to Burnsville, NC where he graduated from high school. He then served in the USMC in the Pacific theater in WWII before graduating from Asheville-Biltmore College.
Bob was employed at Finkelstein’s while in college before joining the plant engineering section at American Enka Corporation. He retired as a Lighting Systems Application Specialist for General Electric Company in Hendersonville, NC and Houston, TX after 30 years. He enjoyed, among many interests, genealogy, family and WNC history, Marine Corps history, and vintage automobiles. For many years he was scoutmaster for Boy Scouts Troop 610 and stayed active in scouting when he moved to Texas. He was also active with the Lion’s Club in North Carolina and Texas for 48 years. He was a founding and active member of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence McCormick Cheadle and Elsie Charlotte Sundgren Cheadle, his sister, Betty Joyce Fender, and his brother David B. Cheadle.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth Ann Cheadle, his sons Rand, Greg and wife Vicki and Eric and wife Donna, grandchildren Adam, Andrew and Allison and husband Vrishil Gandhi, along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
A memorial service with military honors will be held 11:00 am Thursday, March 1, at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Hendersonville, NC. The Reverends Philip McLain and Larry Rabon will officiate. The family will receive guests at the church for one hour prior to the service. There will also be a 12:00 pm reception at the church following the service. He will be interred at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC on Friday, March 2nd, in a private family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, 639 Maple St, Hendersonville, NC 28792 or to the charity of one’s choice.
