His great granddaughters are Elisabeth Hayes (Lisile) Wlcek and Hannah Alvarez. His great grandson is Jebediah Byrd Kramer. His beloved dog Maddi has been adopted by a loving family to spend the rest of her days.

Bob was a native of Charleston, WV where he learned to fly at age 12 and became the stateís youngest licensed pilot at age 14. At 17 he joined the Navy and earned his wings just as the War ended. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. After a stint with DuPont, where he met Helen, a chemist, he spent his career with Union Carbide in South Charleston, WV.

The couple retired to Hendersonville in 1980 and spent many happy years there. They moved to Carolina Village in 1990. Bob was a master gardener and provided fresh produce to many residents over the years. He was also seen roller blading around the facilities in his younger days. After Helen was moved to the Medical Center with Alzheimerís in 2006, Bob visited daily to feed her, do her laundry and provide comfort. The staff of the Carolina Village Medical Center came to know and care for him because of the kind and loving way he treated Helen throughout her illness. Over the past 18 months his granddaughter Abby was his primary caregiver, spending much of her time caring for him and providing enjoyable companionship.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Village Hall of Carolina Village.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Carolina Village Employee appreciation fund @ 600 Carolina Village Rd. Hendersonville, NC 28792. The Medical Center staffís compassionate and sensitive care of Helen and Bob and indeed his mother, Mildred Kramer Putnam in their last days was exceptional and a source of great comfort to the family.
