Mr. Russell Lewis of Hendersonville, NC, lost his short battle with liver cancer on February 15, 2010, at the age of 89. Mr. Lewis, who has lived in Hendersonville since 1982, passed away in the medical center of Carolina Village surrounded by family.
Born in Syracuse, NY on April 17, 1920 to Lillian D. and Arthur Lewis, ìRussî as he was known, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Syracuse in 1942. He served as a captain in the US Army Airforce during WWII, stationed in the Aleutian Islands amongst other places. He married his beloved bride of 65 years, Hjordis Pedersen, in 1944 at Kelly Air Field in San Antonio, TX.
Russ worked as an engineer in the paper industry for more than 30 years. He was a past Rotary Club President, a member of the Masonic Order and the Watch/Clock National Association, and an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville. Russ was involved in many volunteer projects including being a driver for FISH and serving meals at the rescue mission. He enjoyed golf, bridge, and restoring antique cars and clocks, and spent many hours in the Carolina Village woodworking shop.
Russ is survived by wife, Hjordis Lewis of Hendersonville, NC; brother, Richard Lewis of Indianapolis, IN; daughters, Barbara White of Sarasota, FL and Mary Grajko of Syracuse, NY; son, Stephen Lewis of Minneapolis, MN; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents, Lillian and Arthur Lewis and grandson, Robert White.
The family would like to thank Hospice and all of the caregivers at Carolina Village for their kindness and compassion shown to Mr. Lewis and to us.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 900 Blythe St., Hendersonville, NC 28791.
