Ruth Shook Watson

Ruth Pauline Shook Watson, 87, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, December 10, at the Elizabeth House following a short illness. A native of Bryson City, she graduated from Swain County High School in Bryson City. She was a daughter of the late Charles Rufus and Maymie Stalcup Shook and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Robert, sisters, Faye, Lucille and Aileen and her husband, Sam R. Watson, who died in 2007. She had lived in San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Jose, California prior to moving to Henderson County 29 years ago. She was a bookkeeper for Western Union, Bank of America and Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1957. She was a member of Etowah Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies III Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Watson is survived by her son, David Watson of Hendersonville; 6 sisters, Vergie Mae DeHart of Bryson City, Lillian Hipps of Arden, Carolyn Greene of Arden, Marie Greene of Leicester, Margaret Breedlove of Gastonia and Jean Almond of Gainesville, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 12, 2011 at Etowah Baptist Church. Rev. Brian Henderson will officiate. Burial will follow in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glory Fund at Etowah Baptist Church, P.O. Box 326, Etowah, NC 28729.
