William Carroll Etherton, 96, passed away peacefully at Carolina Village Medical Center Wednesday, March 23, after a short period of declining health. A native of Carbondale, Illinois, he was the son of the late James E. and Julia Mitchell Etherton. He was also proceeded in death by his wife, Helen Lucine Morlock Etherton. They were married 73 years. He was a graduate of Carbondale Community High School, Carbondale, IL and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Illinois. He was a long time member of the university’s Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He spent the last 30 years as residents of Hendersonville, NC. Mr. Etherton was a member of the Elks Lodge, Lions Club and Shriners for nearly 75 years. He was past Commodore of the National Rebel Sailing Class Association. He was past president of the Carbondale National Bank, Carbondale, IL. He served 6 years on the University of Illinois Alumni Association board and 4 years on the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association board. He was on the board of directors with Carbondale Savings and Loan from 1950-1981. He served during World War II with the United States Army Air Force from 1941-1945. He spent 30 months in Africa and Italy.
Mr. Etherton is survived by his sister Annabel Etherton Bergman (Ken) of Wheaton, IL; two sons, James W. Etherton and his wife Cindy of Swansea, IL and Justin (Jud) E. Etherton and his wife Gayle of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, James Justin Etherton of Belleville, IL, Julie Etherton Parker and her husband Jeff of Salisbury, Dottie Etherton Morgan and her husband Chad of Peoria, AZ and Myra Etherton McDonough and her husband Kip of Hickory; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah, Brian and Faith Parker, Will, Landon and Grace Morgan and Harrison McDonough. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at 10:00am Saturday, April 2, followed by a memorial service at 11:00am at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, NC. Steve Scoggins will officiate. Burial will be in Carbondale, IL at a later date.
