William M. Staudenmaier, 90 of Hendersonville,died Friday, November 25, 2011 at Lifecare Center following a brief illness. A native of Minnesota, he lived with his wife and children in Parkersburg, West Virginiafor 18 years before moving to Hendersonville in 1962. He was the son of the late W.Walter and Olive Staudenmaier, and husband of the late Lois Zumberge Staudenmaier, who died in 2004. He wasalso preceded in death by his son William Martin ìMartyî Staudenmaier, II, and his wife Majella Deramos Staudenmaier.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering program in wartime, then from the Naval Mine Warfare school to become a U. S. Navy officer in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Breese, laying mines in Japanese waters. He saw the flag raised at Iwo Jima and weathered two typhoons. He was employedby E. I. Dupont de Nemours as a maintenance supervisor throughout his entire career, retiring from the Brevard plant in1981. Following his retirement, he and Lois loved traveling as Caravan Leaders with the Holiday Rambler Association. Upon returning full-time to Hendersonville,he took great pleasure as a volunteer with the Henderson County Sheriff Volunteers In Partnership program, providing security at the Henderson County Courthouse from 2004 through 2011. He was a member of First Congregational Church, an avid golfer, contract bridge player, gymnast,and trumpet player. A dedicated HAM radio operator, he maintained registration of his call letters WF4F with the Federal Communications Commission through 2011, and was a lifetime member ofthe American Radio Relay League.

He served in the Lions Club for 55 years, becoming a Melvin Jones Fellow and receiving the Jack Stickley Award. He wasa charter member of the Parkersburg, West Virginia and Hendersonville Daybreak Lions Clubs, and Past District Governor of District 31-A.

Surviving are his daughter Janet Lois Asancheyev of St. Paul, Minnesota; former son-in-law Pierre Asancheyev of Minnetonka,Minnesota; granddaughter Mia Staudenmaier Bagby and husband Darrell and their children Donavan,Leila, and Maxim of Gainesville, Florida; granddaughter Nadia Asancheyev and husband Jake Cumsky-Whitlock and their son Augustus, of Washington, DC; grandson Alexandre Asancheyev of Washington, DC.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 30, at First Congregational Church. Dr. E. Richard Weidler will officiate.
